Organ transplantation from person to person has become a reality. But there is a problem.
Organs for transplantation are sorely lacking. According to scientists, the solution is to transplant organs from animals to humans. Such a transplant experience should happen this year.
There is such a term "xenograft". In essence, this is a transplant of organs, tissues or cellular structures from an organism of one biological species into the organism of another. And such experiments were very successful. As it turned out, animals can be used as donors of blood, stem cells, skin and nerve tissue. But not so simple. You can’t take any animal and transplant an organ from it to a person. The organ simply will not work correctly. That is why genetically modified animal species are used for such experiments, so that organs suitable for transplantation grow inside them.
According to The Guardian, donors in this case will be genetically modified pigs, and a kidney will be transplanted to a person.
Why pigs? Their genome is quite easy to modify, the animals themselves are easy to grow and maintain, and their organs are similar to human in size and physiology.
British surgeons believe in themselves and declare: if the kidney transplant operation becomes successful, then after three years, scientists intend to carry out a heart transplant.
