Before starting the study, experts analyzed blood samples to measure four biomarkers of inflammation:
the amount of fibrinogen protein; the number of white blood cells; von Willebrand factor coagulation factor VIII.
The overall level of inflammation was calculated using these indicators.
Also, experts have measured the level of C-reactive protein, whose level in the blood increases in the presence of inflammation. All participants were divided into four groups depending on the overall level of inflammation and the content of C-reactive protein.
Scientists found that those who had high rates of inflammation, there was an 8% deterioration of memory and other thinking skills.
The maximum amount of C-reactive protein resulted in a 12% deterioration in cognitive abilities. Specialists took into account such factors as education, heart disease and high blood pressure.
