Many different drugs may work better if taken at certain times of the day. A large-scale study shows that blood pressure pills are most effective when taken before bedtime, rather than in the morning, reports European Heart Jounal.

Now doctors recommend doing this in the morning, but this is based on the belief that the main thing is to lower morning blood pressure.
However, it turned out that taking medication in the evening helps to control not only nighttime, but also daytime average arterial pressure in people with hypertension. In addition, the risks of dying from a stroke, heart failure, or heart attack are halved.
How was the study
19,000 people were recruited to study the effectiveness of the pills against high blood pressure.
The patients were divided at random into two groups: one took the pill in the morning, and the other immediately in the evening before going to bed. They were observed for more than 5 years, and it turned out that in those patients who took the drugs in the evening, the risks of dying from the effects of hypertension were halved.
How to lower blood pressure
Experts say this is easily explained by the fact that pressure should naturally decrease at night, and if this does not happen, it automatically increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
In patients who took the medicine before bedtime, the average pressure at night decreased and was even much lower throughout the day compared with those who took the medicine every morning.
It is completely free and can save many lives,
– states authoritative scientist and professor Ramon Hermida from Vigo University.
According to him, more research needs to be done for various population groups and with as many brands of drugs as possible.
Important! If you are currently taking anti-blood pressure medications, share this study with your GP or pharmacist and discuss with him all the risk factors for changing the time you take the drug. Since there may be specific reasons why your doctor has prescribed a medicine at any particular time of the day.
