Gluten-free diet involves a complete rejection of products containing gluten or replacing them with gluten-free. There is a myth that supposedly gluten is deposited on the walls of the intestine and impairs its function, because it does not dissolve in water. Or a gluten-free diet helps to lose weight. Or it just helps to feel better and healthier, reports the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

What is gluten
Gluten or gluten is a spare protein. This product is safe for most people and is well absorbed by the body. It is found in cereal grains – wheat, barley, rye and all derivative products, including buns, loaves and beer. Gluten is also added to sausages, dairy products, various sauces (ketchup and mayonnaise). It gives these products density and viscosity, keeps moisture and in some cases prevents drying.
If you buy it separately and just eat it, then it does not hurt 99% of us. It is also safe to eat meat or eggs, which also contain protein.
To whom gluten harms
There are 1% of people on the planet who are very dangerous to consume gluten. This is due to an autoimmune disease – celiac enteropathy or celiac disease.
Celiac disease – what is it? Autoimmune disease in which gluten is contraindicated in people. During the use of gluten, their immune system creates antibodies that, in particular, damage the intestinal walls. This disrupts the absorption of nutrients by the body. As a result, a person loses the vital elements – iron, folic acid and the like.
Even 150 milligrams of gluten is contraindicated for people with celiac disease. Therefore, the only way for them to consume the large assortment of cereals, pasta, and pastries that people usually eat is to buy the same products, but without gluten. Or even refuse them.
Diagnosis of celiac disease is possible only by a blood test for antibodies and a biopsy. If the diagnosis is confirmed, then only then you can go on a gluten-free diet.
Why not give up gluten
Refusing products with gluten and switching to their gluten-free counterparts is not only not worth it, but also harmful.
People who refuse all products with gluten are forced to exclude whole grain cereals containing bran from wheat, oats, barley, rye from the diet. And they are very useful because they provide our body with fiber, important vitamins and nutrients like iron, calcium and protein.
Gluten free does not harm 99% of people
There are no scientifically based studies that confirm that gluten-free foods are beneficial or help people lose weight without celiac disease. After all, gluten in gluten-free foods is usually replaced by really harmful fat and sugar.
Of course, there are pluses here too, because taking care of the gluten in the composition, in addition to whole grain cereals, people stop eating cookies, sausages, white bread, ketchup and the like. These products, in addition to the innocent gluten, contain quite dangerous trans fats, preservatives and sugar. Thus, refusing them, people feel healthier precisely because they do not eat all of the above components, and not gluten.
Gluten-free food makers have successfully used common gluten myths to boost sales. People who are not diagnosed with celiac disease or are allergic to gluten voluntarily go on a gluten-free diet, wanting to be in trend. For them, such a diet can be hazardous to health.
