The National Gallery of Australia and the Dementia Program have been working together for over 12 years, and now scientists have analyzed the effectiveness of such cooperation.
The essence of the experiment
People with dementia participate in group discussion tours of the gallery, during which they get acquainted with art, interpret it, discuss impressions and emotions that they experience.
Art Improves Dementia
Scientists analyzed the cortisol level of the participants in the experiment. Cortisol is the main hormone of stress, it is important in the process of regulating mood, pressure and sleep cycles.
Cortisol levels usually rise in the morning immediately after waking up and decline in the evening.
However, in the presence of dementia, this process is disrupted, as a result of which people feel increased weakness, agitation and a decrease in cognitive functions.
Dementia – what is it? Dementia affects thinking, behavior and ability to perform daily activities. The work of the brain is significantly impaired, and this affects the normal social and working activities of man. The first sign of dementia is the inability to perform daily activities.
Dementia can occur in anyone, but the risk increases with age. Most people with dementia are older people.
The experiment showed that after six weeks, cortisol levels improved significantly.

In addition, all participants in the experiment eased the symptoms of depression and improved working memory and speech speed.
