What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disease of bone tissue in which its amount is significantly reduced, which leads to brittle bones. The danger of osteoporosis is that the more severe the disease, the more likely it is to get injured even with a small load.
Osteoporosis is also dangerous because it has no symptoms and signs – it is usually found during a fracture.
How was the study
The study involved 11 084 women who were at the last stage of menopause. They were divided into two groups: the first slept up to 5 hours a day, and the second to 7.
Specialists found that participants in the first group had a significantly lower BMD in the hips, neck and spine than participants in the second group.
BMD is the bone mineral density.
What causes lack of sleep
Scientists also found that the first group had 63% higher risks of osteoporosis of the thigh and spine.
I hope this study can serve as a reminder to strive for the recommended minimum 7 hours of sleep per day for our physical and mental health,
– noted Heather Oaks-Balkom, Ph.D., lead author of the study, University of Buffalo
