This is not about grief- “doctors” who literally bought their diploma (it’s not difficult to find horror stories about treatment from such supposedly specialists on the Internet).
We will talk about a more subtle and insidious approach – when certified doctors in clinics with all possible and, moreover, using legal methods, lure money from patients. Marina Kolesnichenko, a dentist, the chief physician of Beauty Line, broke up dental “scams” that you risk facing into several groups.
So, what do you face in dentistry?
Diagnosis tricks – sleight of hand and no fraud!
This is one of the most common methods for unscrupulous dentists to shake off as much money as possible from a patient. In the worst case, you can lose not only crisp bills, but also health. Here is a brief list of diagnostic tricks:
the doctor “discovers” a much more serious disease, for example, pulpitis, although you came up with a complaint of caries, enamel erosion at the site of a chipping, etc.
the doctor “finds” cysts, granulomas, mythical bite defects, etc. that do not exist on an x-ray image;
The doctor claims without any proof that you need to treat almost the entire mouth – but when you go to another clinic, confused by the number of sick teeth, another dentist is surprised to find you have only two caries,
the doctor literally blackmails you with a state of health – allegedly, without a full range of the most expensive procedures, you will lose your teeth altogether,
The most terrible case – the doctor treats a healthy tooth! And the most dishonest doctors can not just "fill in", but also generally remove a normal, strong tooth!
The key word here is unproven. Indeed, it is not uncommon for a doctor to find in a patient not just caries, but real, real-life pulpitis, suddenly find a cyst in the picture, etc.
The difference is that in such a situation, a conscientious specialist will show you everything found on X-ray images, show computed tomography data, even use an intraoral video camera to make sure that the problems really exist.
Therefore, the way to combat dishonest diagnosis No. 1 is to require the doctor to show you all the research results and explain where he found pulpitis, cysts, etc.
The second way is to ask the doctor to make several different treatment plans. However, a conscientious doctor himself will offer you at least two solutions to the problem. In addition, if you say that the most expensive procedures you can not afford, he will always select, within the limits of the capacity of the clinic, inexpensive but effective methods of treatment.
Of course, it also happens that your problem can be solved only in one way or during the course of treatment additional difficulties are revealed. But even here the doctor will always clearly show you everything in the pictures and explain in detail what and why he does. Also, a number of clinics offer payment of expensive procedures by installments.
How would services: something you don't know about
However, it is risky to mislead patients with diagnostic tricks – first, the patient may suspect that the matter is unclean and demand a clear argument. Secondly, at the stage of diagnosis and decision making, the patient may refuse treatment and go to check the diagnosis at another clinic.
Tricks with the technique of providing services are more reliable in the eyes of dishonest doctors – and here the patient is much more defenseless: he is already sitting in a chair with a drilled tooth, and besides ordinary people do not understand much about the subtleties of the selection of materials, methods of treatment, etc. Most popular tricks:
treatment with conventional materials at the cost of premium – for example, a ceramic-metal crown is placed on a patient at the price of the most modern zirconia crown,
procedures are carried out for the patient or services are imposed that are not needed at all in his situation – for example, teeth whitening before installing braces,
fake promotions – you will be promised a discount or a free service, but it turns out that this will have to fulfill almost impossible conditions. Aerobatics – to provide the patient a service "at a discount", but in fact take more money than without it!
and for the most daring clinics – inclusion in the account of procedures that you do not do!
Protecting against such “scams” is possible only with the help of knowledge and self-education. Of course, we are not talking about getting a second degree in the dental profile – but it is necessary to read and analyze information from open sources.
First, pay close attention to the site of the selected clinic. Only one factor justifies the high price of services – this is a premium class clinic. It means that highly qualified doctors must work in it, which is confirmed by international certificates and diplomas. They must be present on the page of the doctor.
Also, doctors use only premium materials – make sure of this by searching the Internet for the names of implants that are used in the clinic, braces, crowns, etc.
In all other cases, the huge price is not justified by anything – and composite veneers do not cost 40-50 thousand, as super modern lumineers.
By the way, here is the second method – let's say you have not yet decided on a clinic, but you already know that, for example, you want to install veneers. Study several prices from different clinics and compare the cost of similar services. So you get an idea about the price level – and save yourself ka from big expenses, and from the risk of running into a reverse scam – when you are promised top-class quality at an unrealistically low price.
Alas, there is no such thing in dentistry – say, installing an implant simply cannot cost 10-12 thousand rubles.
With a flick of the wrist, the implant price turns into …
Speaking of implantation. Many patients have a hard time understanding the intricacies and differences of Swiss or German implants of the premium category from their cheaper Israeli and Korean counterparts. In addition, implantation is a long process, which includes several stages, different manipulations, the use of a variety of materials …
Taking advantage of this complexity, many clinics calmly report on their websites: “The price of an implant is 7500 rubles!”
The patient, happily agitated, runs to the clinic and, after diagnosis, finds out that this is only the cost of the implant itself, and the price of implantation as a whole is from 50-60 thousand rubles, or even higher. Disappointment!
What are these clinics counting on? Obviously, this is a trick for institutions where there are not so many clients yet – such dentistry expects that, having already passed their diagnosis, the patient will not change horses at the crossing and go to other doctors. But is it worth staying in the clinic where you were initially attempted to be lured by deception?
The easiest way to fight is to remember that an implant is one medical product, and implantation is a whole range of procedures: diagnostics, bone grafting if necessary, surgeon’s work in installing an implant, work of dental technicians on creating temporary and permanent crowns … All this will never happen cost 5-7 thousand and even 10-15.
Whitening and color tricks
This is a very popular procedure – it is quite simple, takes relatively little time, and the result you get immediately, without numerous visits to the doctor. But here too, unscrupulous clinics are ready to deceive you – and without a twinge of conscience they promise to whiten your teeth by as much as 20 tones on the Vita scale!
However, this is simply physically impossible. Doctors during bleaching, selection of fillings, etc. The Vita scale is used as a palette in which all the natural shades of tooth enamel are divided into 4 groups according to the pigment shade. Group A includes yellowish-pink tones, B – lemon, C – grayish-yellow, D – pure grayish. In each group of such shades 4 pieces. Total we get 16 possible options for the color of your smile. The doctor determines your initial tone, but even if it is as dark as possible, it is impossible to whiten your teeth by more than 15 shades.
Moreover, honest doctors and clinics will immediately tell you that even with the most modern laser whitening on the most modern equipment your teeth will brighten by no more than 12 tones.
Services that are not really there
And finally – the most "innocent" focus, which even can not always be called a scam. For example, you are going to install Lumineers – and found a clinic, on the site of which it is written that she is engaged in this type of work. You came to the appointment and learned from the doctor that in fact there is nothing like this in the clinic! Only veneers, no more!
But why point out services on the site that are not really in the clinic? Firstly, in this way, the management of dentistry can study the demand – what procedures are needed and whether it is worth spending on them to put them into practice. Secondly, the calculation here is that once you have come to the reception, you will not begin to waste time again, look again at the clinic and agree to what is being offered.
Sometimes you can put up with it. But a patient suffering from dentophobia is very upset to find that the clinic does not treat teeth under sedation, which he counted on. Alas, it is rather difficult to find out in advance whether dentistry is providing the services stated on the site, except to look for reviews on the Internet.
But this situation can be avoided if you focus on the recommendations of colleagues, friends and relatives, especially if they themselves have gone through the procedure that you need.
