Poll: a quarter of Russians consider the Internet harmful to the psyche
The ruble falls, and the Russians do not leave a feeling of happiness
More than 70% of Russians consider the US a hostile country
Two, it would seem, completely different news: the confectioners' association reported a record consumption of sweet products last year, and the Ministry of Health announced an increase in depressions among Russians.
How can these events be related?
The confectionery industry association said that in 2018, sweet consumption in Russia reached 25.2 kg per person.
It cannot be said that this is a lot: one German resident, for example, eats an average of 34 kg of sweets per year, and the average Briton is more than 27 kg. But in Russia, this figure has been growing for almost 9 years.
The executive director of the association, Vyacheslav Lashmankin, said that the number of sweets, buns and chocolate eaten by Russians every 12 months increased by 3%. The exception was 2015, when per capita consumption decreased by 6.2% compared with the previous year – from 24.1 to 22.4 kg per person per year.
Vyacheslav Lashmankin explained the increasing interest of Russians in confectionery products by the constant expansion of the range and the emergence of new technologies. But many experts in the field of medicine believe that it is too early to rejoice: in fact, the increase in the number of sweet teeth can be directly related to the increase in the number of people acutely experiencing various stresses.
“Sweets help to get satisfaction and quickly reduce the level of a stressful situation. During the period of emotional experiences in the body increases the production of cortisone, whose task is to eliminate the negative mood. For many people, the fight against stress is associated with uncontrolled consumption of food. Over time, a person forms the habit of escaping from stress with the help of sweets and other favorite foods. The feeling of satiety pushes problems into the background, ”says psychiatrist Nikolai Ignashevich, Ph.D.
In Russia, according to rough estimates, 70% of Russians are constantly in a state of stress, and a third of the entire population is in a state of severe stress. The situation with diseases of depression is no better.
Head of the Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry named after V.P. Serbian Zurab Kekelidze said that depression will come out on top among mental illnesses and may become the leader in terms of the number of days of disability. Not so long ago, the peak of the disease fell on the age between 30 and 40 years, but today the depression has become much younger, and young people under 25 are already falling ill.
In part, this version is confirmed by the confectioners themselves. Some experts note that in the country a little, but still sales of alcohol have fallen. The promotion of healthy lifestyles has done its job, and the share of strong drinks in the volume of consumer goods has decreased from 20.2 to 20%. People now prefer to jam their problems.
“When alcohol sales go down, a pastry grows. People either drink or drink, ”said Leonid Baryshev, general director of a large industrial enterprise. It is interesting that, according to VTsIOM, last year there were fewer people who save on sweets, their number decreased by an average of 5-7%. It is likely that soon it will become clear that the number of patients with depression and suffering from stress has increased even more, but instead of a pharmacy, they began to go to a candy store.
