The study suggests that mashed potatoes help athletes to be hardy and has the same effect as special hydrocarbon gels to maintain blood glucose levels.

Potatoes are a good alternative for athletes, because it is budgetary, but, as the authors of the study assure, no less effective.
Potatoes are a cost-effective source of carbohydrates and nutrients, scientists say.
The study involved 12 experienced cyclists, all of them trained for years. And in order to participate in the experiment, they had to make a 120-minute bike ride.
During the experiment, the participants were randomly divided into three groups: the first group consumed only water, the second – (energy) carbohydrate gel, the third – the equivalent amount of carbohydrates obtained from potatoes.
Carbohydrates contained in potatoes help achieve athletic performance
During the run, participants monitored blood glucose, body temperature, exercise intensity and gastrointestinal processes.
Scientists did not find a difference between the indicators of the second and third groups – those who consumed energy gel and carbohydrates from potatoes.
The heart rate was similar, both groups showed a significant increase in productivity, in contrast to participants who consumed only water.
However, those who consumed potatoes were more likely to experience bloating, pain, and flatulence.
