WINNED OSPU AND POLIOMYELITIS
Virological research was developed in the 30s, and already during the Great Patriotic War, the institute was able to organize the mass production of preparations necessary for the front. And when, in the 1950s, the USSR fought paralytic poliomyelitis, specialists in viral drugs were able to develop in the shortest possible time the country's large-scale production technology of the first domestic poliomyelitis vaccine.
Issued 43 million of its doses managed to vaccinate more than 8 million children, which sharply reduced the incidence of a terrible disease. Subsequently, the Russian vaccine was exported to Japan, Iran, Romania, Cuba, China and other countries.
The institute also played a major role in the fight against smallpox. It was his scientists who, participating in the WHO global program to eradicate this terrible disease, proposed the most advanced technology for the uninterrupted release of the dry pox vaccine. As a result, smallpox was eliminated in forty countries in Asia and Africa – the Soviet Union donated more than 1.5 billion doses of smallpox vaccine to the World Health Organization, which is recognized as one of the best in the world.
But to rest on our laurels is not in the traditions of the scientists of the renowned Scientific Research Institute. I.I. Mechnikov. Already in 1985, they began intensive research on the development of diagnostic systems for the detection of human immunodeficiency viruses, hepatitis B and C, and within a year, the first domestic test systems for screening and confirming HIV infection were created and introduced into public health practice.
Another of the significant achievements of the Mechnikovsky Institute is the creation of the Immunovac-VP4 vaccine, which has high immunomodulating properties and activates important immunity mechanisms.
Today, this vaccine is effectively used in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases of the respiratory organs, allergic diseases, herpes viral infection and in the prevention of acute respiratory infections. The history of the institute is connected with the names of outstanding scientists whose contribution to the development of Russian microbiology, virology and epidemiology is invaluable.
For more than 30 years, the institute was headed by Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Honored Scientist of the RSFSR Boris Fedorovich Semenov. His successor was Vitaly Zverev, Professor, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in which the Research Institute of Viral Preparations of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences was attached to the Research Institute of Vaccines in 2005. Currently, the Research Institute named after I.I. Mechnikova is headed by Professor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Oksana Anatolievna Svitich.
Today, the institute is a scientific base for training highly qualified personnel, and in the scientific advisory department of the institution, the population is assisted in the diagnosis, immunotherapy and prevention of allergic diseases, as well as in the prevention of childhood infections and the most common chronic viral diseases.
