In another study in 2012, packaged drugs were evaluated that expired 28-40 years ago. Twelve of the 14 compounds were found to retain 90% effectiveness, including codeine, hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Aspirin, however, did not pass this test.
Medicines retain their effectiveness after the expiration date
It was later discovered that injectable adrenaline retains its sterility for 2.5 years after the expiration date. This may indicate non-toxicity, but not the effectiveness of the drug.
In the study of 40 EpiPen, it was found that for 50 months after the expiration date, all injections remained 80% of the concentration of the active substance (and more). Therefore, doctors conclude that it is better to have an expired drug on hand than nothing.
Important information, but, unfortunately, the findings of American scientists can not be transferred to the Ukrainian drugs. Therefore, we do not recommend to use drugs that have expired.
