Just about the children will again plunge into school everyday life, and first-graders for the first time cross the threshold of the class. And this means that with the end of the holidays, the load on the eyes of the child will increase significantly.
How to protect the eyesight of babies and adolescents – says Sati Agagulyan, ophthalmologist, refractive surgeon Eye Clinics "Clear Vision".
Ophthalmologist's preventive examination before school
It must be taken at least a month before September 1, so that the doctor has time to take action if he identifies any problem. However, even if the child does not complain about anything and it seems to you that everything is okay with his eyesight, an annual visit to an ophthalmologist is as mandatory as a regular visit to the dentist.
Eye examination includes a complete ophthalmological examination with an assessment of visual and oculomotor functions. The doctor studies visual acuity, the condition of the accommodating muscle, the optical media of the eye, examines the fundus with the study of blood vessels, retina, optic nerves, determines refraction, i.e. the presence or absence of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism. Moreover, the assessment of refraction is necessarily carried out on both a narrow and a wide pupil (in conditions of cycloplegia).
If a disease is detected, then treatment cannot be delayed, otherwise it will lead to aggravation of problems in the future. The earlier treatment is started, the more favorable the prognosis, the more effective it is. So you can achieve full functional rehabilitation of the child, even in severe cases.
The visual acuity of the child should be sufficient for teaching ordinary school. In 80% of cases, childhood eye diseases are either congenital or manifest in early childhood. Therefore, it is important not to miss the situation: sometimes because of the parents refusing annual examinations, the child has problems that lead to the need to postpone the start of studies for a year or two, necessary for treatment.
How to choose glasses and contact lenses for a student?
Only with the help of a pediatric ophthalmologist and after a full examination. You can not pick up a child's eye glasses. Glasses must be matched correctly and by a qualified ophthalmologist.
There are practically no contraindications to spectacle correction. Indications for wearing glasses are refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, which leads to a progressive decrease in visual acuity.
If the child has these problems, then the examination no longer comes down to an annual assessment of visual acuity once a year. The ophthalmologist individually selects the examination regimen, the necessary courses of treatment, and in the process of dynamic observation, prescribes glasses correction if necessary.
As for contact lenses, there are no age restrictions on their wearing. They are contraindicated in progressive myopia, but in other cases, the doctor selects them individually for the parameters of the child. In addition, when doing sports, glasses are traumatic. It is very important that you keep your contact lens wearable in order to avoid future complications.
What if the child complains of rapid eye fatigue during lessons?
Rapid eye fatigue is a consequence of the fact that a timely preventive examination was not carried out, and medical or preventive procedures were not prescribed. Visual fatigue affects the learning process itself, it can cause a headache, a deterioration in the general well-being of the child. In this case, an examination by an ophthalmologist is necessary.
The main way to relieve tension from the eyes is to change the type of activity, i.e. during the break, the child should just relax: walk, run, play, but not on a smartphone or tablet, but in outdoor games. For example, parents should replace the smartphone with a regular phone – it will be enough to keep in touch, but there are no toys, YouTube and other temptations in it.
Also, if a child has vision problems, the doctor will issue a certificate with recommendations on where to sit the child, in which row, at what desk.
Alas, no gymnastics for the eyes is a prevention from the development of eye diseases or their progression. The only preventive measure is the correct alternation of work and rest regimes.
The child must attend, in addition to circles and courses, sports sections, spend a lot of time outdoors. Active games, walking, playing sports – this is the best gymnastics and prevention for the eyes.
The second myth, which many more believe in, is special diets for vision. They do not exist. The diet of the child should be complete, without fast food, but with a wholesome healthy food, diet. But neither carrots, nor blueberries, nor nuts and honey are a measure of disease prevention and, all the more, a method of treating them. The same applies to vitamin complexes, no matter how hard they are advertised. They strengthen the body as a whole, which positively affects vision, but does not improve the condition of the eyes.
But what exactly will help is limiting the use of gadgets. It is important to observe the regime – to play with them only on weekends or on holidays, when there are no loads associated with training. But schools are now actively using computers and tablets, which means that you need to choose the right screen size – the larger the better.
It is better to study at a stationary computer and in no case use gadgets in moving vehicles. A constant change in focal length during movement that occurs in transport leads to worsening eye problems.
