With the expansion of the register of bone marrow donors, patients with blood cancer will have more chances for treatment. Rusfond is sure of this.
Bone marrow transplantation is often the only chance to save patients with leukemia. However, donors are difficult to find. Relatives are rarely suitable for this role, to search across the country for a long time, and abroad is very expensive (it costs about 6 thousand euros).
In 2013, Rusfond, together with the First St. Petersburg Medical University and a number of other organizations, created the Vasya Perevoshchikov National Register of Bone Marrow Donors. For six years, 100,000 potential donors are registered in the registry. Some of the potentials have become real.
Belgorod Darya Tsvetova donated blood for typing in March, and already in August they called her from the register and said that she had approached someone. Mom and husband were against it – they were afraid that the girl would be taken to organs. But Daria’s decision was irreversible. She went to Petersburg, went through a donation and returned home. Now relatives are proud of her.
The bone marrow collection procedure is really simple. There are two ways: the first – under anesthesia, the fluid is taken from the upper edge of the pelvic bones and the second – blood from the vein is passed through the device, hematopoietic stem cells are collected, and the rest of the blood is returned to the body through a vein on the other hand. Details here.
In order for people to learn about the register, why it is needed, so that they are inspired by the idea and are not afraid of the procedure, the expedition “Coincidence” was organized – a project of the Rusfond. Lecturers, doctors, journalists travel to different cities of Russia and talk about the phenomenon of bone marrow donation. December 2, they visited Stary Oskol, met with students of medical and polytechnic colleges.

– The expedition will last a little over a year. We plan to visit 120 cities. Our goal is purely enlightening, but we hope that after such meetings people will think things over and want to donate blood, ”said Aleksey Yablokov, editor-in-chief of the site Blood5.
One of the potential donors is Oskolchanka Elena Mayuchikh. Having seen on television the broadcast about the establishment of the register, the girl became interested in the topic, found out the details and decided to participate. Her husband Andrey supported her.
“I was surprised that, by and large, not doing anything special, without sacrificing either my own health or money, I can save someone's life.” I heard stories when they found donors, and they refused at the last moment. Do not understand why? Personally, my husband and I are ready to help. I admit, I even want this, shared Elena.
A correspondent of the Media Center and a resident of Gubkina, having got acquainted with these stories, also decided to register in the register of potential donors.
– I came to the Invitro office, took a coupon, filled out a form (what it looks like, you can see it here), donated 9 ml of blood from a vein and went to work. It took 15 minutes to do everything. And completely free. Now I’m waiting for confirmation from the register and the opportunity to help the cancer patient, ”shared Julia Shekhvorostova.
“We take blood any day.” For four days of the expedition, about 10 people turned to us. This is not much, but, hopefully, people will find out information and come, ”said the administrator of Invitro Natalia Bocharova.

For six years, a little more than 100 thousand potential donors have been registered in the Russian registry. For comparison, in the USA their number reaches 9 million, in Germany up to 8 million, in Poland up to 1.5 million. But the number here is not an indicator. The facts say that people often donate blood unconsciously, and when a coincidence is revealed, they refuse. Therefore, it is important to create not only a large base, but to bring people into it who are really ready to come to the aid at the first call.
You can donate blood for typing in Gubkin at the Invitro office, which is located at 45 Kirova (phone: +7 (47241) 3-30-00). It is fast, free and safe. You will be one of the potential bone marrow donors and, if there is a match, they will call you.
