In a crisis, more men dare to earn through the sale of their sperm. Demand is also growing. In just five years, the number of people who want to buy sperm has tripled.
In Moscow, the international scientific symposium "Reproductive donation: problems and solutions." One of the problems raised at the symposium was the increase in the number of private sperm donors.
DONORS OFFICIAL AND PRIVATE
Unlike official donors, private ones themselves advertise on the Internet, search for clients themselves, and carry out the fertilization process themselves.
Official donors, by contrast, come to reproductive centers where they donate their semen. In this case, there is no contact between the donor and the woman; fertilization occurs artificially – from a test tube.
Reproductive centers complain that private donors are beating customers away. However, in the centers themselves, seed trade is also running briskly. Over five years, sales have tripled: if in 2014 during the IVF procedure donor sperm was used in 8% of cases, now it is 22%.
On the other hand, the number of clients from private donors, experts suggest, is growing more rapidly. It is assumed that, because how many and to whom the “donors at home” sold their seed material, they do not report anywhere and do not report anywhere, including to the tax one.
In theory, the sale of sperm is an entrepreneurial activity, but sellers themselves, even if they wish, will not be able to register as an individual entrepreneur – the activity classifier does not provide for the provision of such services.
FROM A TEST OR IN BED?
The interest in private donors among potential clients and their husbands (when available) is quite understandable: natural conception is safer and more painless for the body compared to the method of artificial insemination, not to mention the fact that IVF involves various medicament and drug interventions in the woman’s body including ovarian stimulation. (Now IVF is sometimes performed without stimulation, but the effectiveness of such procedures is two times lower.)
Rumors that IVF can lead to brain cancer (not scientifically confirmed) have led men with nonviable sperm to voluntarily make their wives pregnant not in a clinic from a test tube, but in a bed near private donor.
In total, there are currently about 600 private sperm donors in Russia who regularly advertise the sale of their seed material. Reproductive centers strongly advise against contacting them. After all, no one knows how healthy or not such a private donor is.
Usually they provide clients with certificates from psychiatric and drug dispensaries, as well as a copy of the medical record from the clinic. However, according to reproductive centers, the very desire to become a private sperm donor can be an indicator of mental illness. Such men are probably secret gigolos, lovers of sleeping with other people's wives, in a word, a sperm donor may well be a sexual pervert.
FOR ONE ACT TO 50 THOUSAND RUBLES
Although it is possible that most donors are driven by a banal thirst for profit. In Moscow, for example, the price for one act of natural conception can reach up to 50 thousand rubles.
Is it really bad? Someone for this money injects whole days a month, gets up at six in the morning, and then five minutes – and 50 thousand in your pocket! In regions, prices are lower: donors ask for 25-30 thousand rubles per act. And, it should be noted, the act is usually not the only one – the majority of women who came to IVF are over the age of 30, or even over 40.
However, many donors agree to more modest fees, and some provide their services completely free.
For comparison: a donor who comes to donate his sperm to a reproductive center is paid only 3-5 thousand rubles. And pleasure, as they say, no. You have to sell sperm in the centers by the way you yourself know how: it is suggested to use strained hands and videos with erotic content.
Reproductive centers warn: if they check their donors for a lot of genetic diseases, then in the case of private clients, they don’t know what hereditary diseases can hide behind a quite blooming appearance. But a private donor can be seen with your own eyes, unlike a donor donating sperm in reprocentres. There it is done anonymously: clients have to be content only with the description of the donor, his children's photos, you can also listen to his voice.
INDIVIDUAL ENTREPRENEURS – SURROGATE MOTHER
According to the head of the Russian reproductive cell bank Reprobank (part of the PAO Institute for Human Stem Cells group) Avtandil Chogovadze, about 20 thousand cases of the use of donor germ cells — sperm and egg cells — are recorded in approximately equal shares annually in Russia. This excludes private donors.
It is not possible to sell eggs privately. But women can become individual entrepreneurs in terms of surrogacy. Last year, only through reproductive centers, 22 thousand children were born to surrogate mothers.
Unlike male donors, a woman selected as a surrogate mother, a couple can bring to a medical center and plant her own embryo from a test tube.
Despite the financial crisis, the number of people wishing to pay for surrogate mother services increased by about 15% this year.
However, the increase in the number of buyers of reproductive services is most likely due not to revenue growth, but to their reduction. If earlier couples tried to conceive a child ten times from their own genetic material and only then resorted to the services of donors, now those who want to have a child are forced to count every penny and do IVF, as they say, for sure.
Official statistics say, for example, that a woman's chances of getting pregnant from her own egg by the age of 45 are reduced to 2% per IVF. If she buys an egg from another woman, then the chances of getting pregnant will immediately increase to 40%.
In reprocentres, clients are reassured: not the mother whose egg is, but the one who gave birth and raised. Allegedly, a woman who endured an alien child under the heart will love him as much as her own. From the point of view of psychology, this is a moot point.
