The esophagus is a tube that connects the stomach and the oral cavity. The walls of the esophagus, unlike the stomach, are not adapted for contact with acid, and they inflame upon reflux.

The person at the same time feels a burning sensation (heartburn), which as if rises from the abdomen and rolls in a wave over the throat.
In general, such an outburst can occur from time to time with everyone (especially if you had eaten fatty or very spicy foods the day before). But if such symptoms bother you regularly, more than 2-3 times a week – you need to consult a doctor.
Why is this happening?
Because the cardiac sphincter does not work well. In the place where the esophagus joins the stomach, there is a sphincter (muscle ring), which contracts (presses the esophagus) and prevents the backward movement of food from the stomach. In people with GERD, it does not work normally or is too relaxed, which leads to the release of stomach contents into the esophagus.
Why does gastroesophageal reflux disease occur?
Conditions that increase intra-abdominal pressure contribute to the occurrence of the disease. Roughly speaking, if you press on the stomach, then its contents can be squeezed into the esophagus.
Obesity; Esophageal hernia; Pregnancy; Binge eating.
Also do not forget about the factors that increase the acidity in the stomach:
Overeating, especially at night; Abuse of fatty, fried and spicy foods; Alcohol or coffee abuse; Acceptance of certain drugs, such as aspirin.
Heartburn can not be treated with soda
Burning in the chest, which rises, usually after eating. At night it may increase; Chest pains when swallowing food; Frequent belching; A feeling of a lump in the throat.
If reflux occurs at night, then such problems may appear:
Chronic cough; Hoarseness; Asthma-like seizures (or if you already have asthma, it can worsen); This is due to the fact that the gastric contents at night can rise up the esophagus so high that it will be released into the trachea and bronchi; Trouble sleeping
Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease
Treatment of GERD, first of all, consists in adjusting the lifestyle: getting rid of excess weight, not eating 2-3 hours before bedtime, healthy food, giving up coffee, chocolate, spices and carbonated drinks, not wearing tight clothes.
Also, the following drugs are used for treatment: proton pump blockers, H2 histamine blockers, antacids. Depending on the severity, treatment can last from a few days to a year.
Consuming soda against heartburn and other problems associated with high acidity can have negative consequences.
For example, due to the fact that carbon dioxide is emitted when soda is taken, the volume of the stomach increases dramatically. The literature even describes a case of rupture of the stomach after ingestion of a large amount of baking soda.
Also, after taking soda and its reaction with hydrochloric acid in the stomach, ionized sodium is released, which is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream. It is very dangerous for people suffering from cardiovascular diseases.
