Most studies do not confirm the clinical efficacy of standard drugs, and waiting for the crystals to come out with the urine is a very long and painful process.
If you look at how kidney stones work today, then since 1980 the methods have not changed, and there is substantial evidence that the drugs used do not work very well,
– says the author of the study, Christopher Lee.
10% of the population suffers from kidney stones
Specialists selected 18 drugs that are used to narrow the vessels. During experiments on pigs, a combination of two of them showed the highest effectiveness in relaxing the walls of the ureter. These drugs were nifedipine, which is used to treat hypertension, as well as a rockkinase inhibitor, which is used to treat glaucoma.
The positive news was that the substances did not spread throughout the body, remaining in the mucous membrane of the ureter. The only drawback of the combination of these drugs is that the drugs are administered only with a catheter and cannot be taken orally.
Scientists will continue to do research to find out exactly how long the relaxation effect lasts and what dose is effective. Now they are organizing a company to continue the development of technology and test the new method in public.
