Moscow doctors record more and more cases of peptic ulcer in adolescents. In their opinion, their love of fast food – fast food, plays a negative role in this.
HISTORY OF DISEASES
Recently, a child with a perforated ulcer was operated on at the Morozov Children's Hospital. So the surgeons call the through destruction of the wall of the stomach due to an ulcer, in which its contents begin to flow into the abdominal cavity. This leads to peritonitis – inflammation of the abdominal cavity. This condition is always life threatening and requires immediate surgical treatment. And the outcome of such a complication is not clear. Unfortunately, far from always peritonitis ends in recovery.
Only in the Morozov hospital is this the fourth case of a complicated ulcer this year, which doctors associate with fast food. Two of them were caused by perforated gastric ulcer. Initially, they thought that a 17-year-old teenager who was admitted to the emergency and abdominal surgery department had appendicitis. There were signs of peritonitis, but with inflammation of the appendix, this also happens, usually when it ruptures. But laparoscopy revealed another reason – in the wall of the stomach there was an opening with a diameter of about 5 mm. This is perforation, the cause of which is most often an ulcer.
Fortunately, an urgent ulcer closure (this surgery lasted an hour and a half) saved the life of a teenager. A week later he was discharged home.
There are several disturbing moments in this news. First, peptic ulcer disease 10 years ago was extremely rare in children and adolescents. It was an adult illness affecting their parents, grandparents. But gradually she began to get younger. And this is a very disturbing trend.
Secondly, in recent years people have learned to treat and treat peptic ulcer with drugs, as a result of which ulcer complications requiring surgical treatment have become rare. Only an untreated or improperly treated ulcer causes perforation of the stomach wall, bleeding and other complications that require surgery, usually emergency. How to explain all this?
The main children's gastroenterologist in Moscow, the head of the gastroenterological department of the Morozov Children's Clinical Hospital, Tamara Skvortsova, notes that all these four teenagers who were in the ambulance at the Morozov hospital said they loved fast food very much. They ate at such restaurants 2-3 times a week. And this is a common story, as a rule, young patients with an ulcer abuse fast food, as well as spicy, fried and fatty dishes. Fast food restaurants are becoming accessible to the general public and even to adolescents. Prices in them are quite affordable for many of them, and they go there by entire companies. Parents also peck at it, and often visits to fast foods are family.
ULCER DISEASE IS AN INFECTION
The situation is really alarming – peptic ulcer is really getting younger, and children's gastroenterologists are beginning to worry. But to attribute it only to fast food is not worth it.
Nutrition plays a supporting role in the development of this disease. Its main cause is the bacterium helicobacter pylori (Helicobacter pylori). It can survive in the acidic environment of the stomach, causing gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) and causing ulcers. Therefore, the treatment of this disease is now unthinkable without a combination of several antibiotics in combination with drugs that suppress the release of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This applies to the treatment of both adults and children.
Studies show that sometimes up to 40-50 percent of adolescents already have Helicobacter pylori in their stomach. As a rule, they become infected in the family. This has been shown in many studies. Therefore, if parents have such a bacterium in their stomach, then there is a possibility that children will also become infected with it.
But this is not a sentence. It is well known that infection occurs through the fecal-oral route. That is, the bacterium is excreted in the feces and to a certain extent it is a disease of dirty hands. Helicobacter pylori can be interrupted by careful hygiene. Hands should be washed very well after the toilet and before eating.
If someone had a peptic ulcer in the family, then the risk of infection is higher, because it was most likely associated with Helicobacter pylori. But it also happens that the carrier of this bacterium is not sick with anything or does not have any symptoms of the disease (there may be a completely hidden course of gastritis or peptic ulcer). And this situation is not very good. The fact is that in addition to gastritis and ulcers, Helicobacter pylori promotes the development of cancer (see "This is important").
