Russia has developed a program for the prevention of falls in people over 65 years of age. Recently the experts of the All-Russian Congress on gerontology and geriatrics will discuss its final version. After that, the program will be launched in pilot regions, including Belgorod region. And by 2024 – will be introduced throughout the country.
The program includes a number of provisions that, according to the organizers, should reduce the risk of falls, – this is what Izvestia says.
First, we are talking about the "behavioral factors" of prevention. Senior citizens will be told about the need to maintain physical activity, including the need to perform exercises to balance. Secondly, about social conditions. Doctors (geriatrics, therapists, etc.), nurses, social workers, and family members of retirees will teach how to organize a safe environment in apartments and houses. It is planned to create resource centers, where it will be possible to hire adaptation means, including special beds and wheelchairs. Emergency button services will appear on the basis of the ambulance. Their task will be rapid diagnosis and effective assistance for fractures. It is assumed that the specialized departments will hospitalize all “age-related” patients with a fracture of the femur, at least 95% of them will be operated on within 24–48 hours. If such an operation is impossible in the nearest hospital, the person should be quickly delivered to a large hospital.
Experts note: the earlier an elderly patient is operated on with a hip fracture, the more chances he has to get to his feet. And without surgery, more than 70% of patients older than 60 years die in the next few months from physical inactivity and complications. But far from all regions, doctors agree to hospitalize such patients. So for the implementation of the program it is necessary to make a real revolution in the thinking of traumatologists.
Facts and Figures
According to statistics, the effects of falls are the fifth most common cause of death for older people. According to WHO, a third of people over 65 fall annually, and more than half of them again. Approximately 10–15% of falls lead to serious injuries – head injuries or hip fractures and, as a result, disability and loss of independence. Experts estimate that the implementation of the program will allow saving up to 30 thousand lives annually.
In countries with a high life expectancy, fall prevention plans for the elderly have been operating for a long time as part of geriatric care. In Russia, such a program is introduced for the first time – as part of the activities of the federal project “The Older Generation” of the national project “Demography”.
In addition to the Belgorod Region, the Volgograd, Voronezh, Samara, and Kaluga Regions, as well as the Perm Territory and Bashkiria were included in the list of pilot regions of the project.
